For many years, Maryla Rodowicz and Urszula Sipińska competed with each other for the audience’s attention, and their conflict was one of the loudest among stars in the times of the People’s Republic of Poland. The cup of bitterness overflowed in 1977 during the Festival in Opole. There were even fisticuffs between the singers.

The discord between him and Urszula Sipińska has been speculated for decades. It all started when both of them conquered the Polish stage in the 1960s. Although not only their voices were different, but also their stage presence and goals, Rodowicz conquered festivals in the country, and Sipińska focused mainly on her foreign career, they treated each other as competition.

it began to flare up in the 1970s. During the Polish Song Festival in Opole, she received a disturbing phone call informing her that her mother was dead. Although it turned out to be a joke, it introduced a tense atmosphere from the start. When the singer entered the stage, more difficulties appeared – first she had problems with the microphone, and later it turned out that the sheet music used by the orchestra was missing. Although no one was officially accused of being the cause of the confusion, it was speculated in the lobby that the competition was behind it. Rodowicz was not provoked. She performed on stage, and in addition with success, because the song “Jadą wozy colorful”, which she sang, became a great hit.

It seemed that the situation between the singers was back on track when, four years later, both stars appeared in one of the popular TV shows, singing the song “Finally together” from the repertoire in a duet. Although they maintained that their conflict was created by the media, most believed that their joint performance was just a marketing ploy.

In the following years, the artists successfully avoided each other, although there were events during which they had to pass each other behind the scenes. However, the cup of bitterness overflowed in 1977 on Apparently, when Sipińska performed on stage, Rodowicz appeared right behind her, parodying her performance. – Urszula got angry and threw at Maryla a strawberry from the table with vegetables and fruits standing on the stage, which was a decoration – journalist Maria Szabłowska, who observed the incident. A struggle ensued, during which the ladies beat each other with hats. “It ended up tearing the sleeve off Ursula’s jacket,” she said.

The artists did not comment on these reports for a long time. It was only more than 25 years after these events that Rodowicz finally spoke out. In an interview with “Viva”, she said that the conflict was just an invention of the sensational press, although she was actually annoyed that her colleague was exaggeratedly inspired by her style. “There was no conflict between us, although it was attributed to us. I was a bit annoyed that he was copying my ideas, for example for costumes, said the artist at the time. In 2010, Sipińska referred to these words in her autobiographical book If I Were an Angel.
