Stefan Friedmann is one of the most colorful figures on the Polish cabaret scene. Undoubtedly, he created his most outstanding roles, including the cult hero of the series “Na Trouble… Bednarski”, based on his own teenage experience. since he was a child, he had an indomitable character, which he willingly talked about in interviews.
Friedmann’s grandmother prayed that he would become a priest. He had many adventures as an altar boy
As it turns out, Friedmann did not always know that he would become an actor. His grandmother encouraged him to enter the seminary after completing his compulsory education. Hoping that faith would tame his character, she constantly dragged him to church to attend masses and services. As he mentioned in an interview with , this task was made easier because the family lived between four churches.
At one point, the teenager even said that maybe he should actually become a priest. Preparing for this role, he volunteered to be an altar boy in the chapel of the Sisters of Nazareth in Krakow. But good humor and mischief did not leave him at all. While serving at the altar, he often made mistakes that did not escape the attention of the faithful. “One day I was supposed to bring incense.” (…) I took my role very, so much that when I entered, with incense, I touched my leg and “cut it down”. The embers spilled onto the carpet, and the carpet began to burn. The terrified sisters screamed and started to extinguish it with holy water, of course, because there was no other. One fell over and then I saw her legs, her white thigh – he told in an interview, adding that it was his first “contact” with a female body.
During the mass, Wojtyła pretended to “catch flies”. The future pope reacted
But that was nothing compared to the situation that happened shortly afterwards during the mass at the church of St. Florian. It was there in the early 1950s that the future pope served as vicar. During the liturgy, Friedmann started fooling around, to which the gathered people started laughing. “I liked being an altar boy because I felt like I was on stage. I remember kneeling behind Wojtyła’s back and pretending to catch flies. People in the church: “Ha, ha, hi, hi,” he recalled with amusement.
However, his inappropriate behavior did not go unnoticed by Karol Wojtyła. Although during the mass he remained unfazed by the laughter coming from everywhere and concentrated on his duties, after the mass he decided to have a serious conversation with the young bully. — In the sacristy, the future pope pulled me by the ear and asked: “Stefcia, Stefcia, what will become of you?” Friedmann recalled.
