Cat tax. Some owners have to pay for their furry. Who will not miss the fee?

While the dog tax is listed in Article 18a of the Local Taxes and Charges Act, the situation is somewhat different in the case of cats. However, this does not change the fact that some cat owners should pay tax. Who has to do it? We suggest.

It is immediately worth noting that not all cat owners will pay tax for having a pet. In this case, the matter is a bit more complicated than in the case of dogs. Tetrapods are subject to Article 18a of the Act on Local Taxes and Charges, and cats are not taken into account here. However, this does not change the fact that some owners will still be in force. Who should be interested in the case and how much will have to be paid?

Cat tax. What does it mean if the rules do not explicitly mention it?

As we mentioned, the dog tax is regulated by law and is included in the above-mentioned regulations. In the case of cats, however, it is completely different, because the record about them is not directly regulated in any documents. However, this does not change the fact that some cat owners should pay the appropriate fee to the Tax Office. Who and when should do it? It turns out that the name “cat tax” is a colloquial term for the fee that must be paid when buying an animal.

In the light of the law resulting from the judgment of the Voivodship Administrative Court in Warsaw (reference number III SA/Wa 615/09), animals, including cats, are treated as objects for which we should pay an appropriate fee. We are talking about the tax on civil law transactions, which we also pay when buying a car.

Not everyone will pay to own a cat. Who is exempt from fees?

As already known, the so-called the cat tax is simply a fee for the purchase of an animal and applies primarily to people who have purchased a purebred pet. So the rate will vary depending on how much you pay for the cat. If it was PLN 1,000 or more, the tax will not be omitted. The portal calculates that when we pay PLN 1,000 for a cat, we will have to pay a tax of PLN 20, because it is 2%. The higher the purchase amount, the higher the fee to the Tax Office, and thus some people will pay really dearly for their pet.

Who will not have to pay tax? In a few cases, the additional fees will be waived by some owners. However, only if:

  • the value of the cat does not exceed PLN 5,308 and the pet was donated to us;
  • the cat was adopted by us or adopted from the street;
  • the owner of the kennel will issue us a VAT invoice.
