The news of the death of the early bassist was announced by The Cavern Club Liverpool, where the band gained popularity. The news was also confirmed by Roag Best, brother of former Beatles drummer Pete Best. The cause of death of the musician has not yet been revealed.
Chase Newby is dead. He was the Beatles’ first left-handed bassist
Chas Newby was the first left-handed bass player to play with the Beatles. The artist joined the line-up for two weeks, when he replaced Stuart Sutcliffe, who remained in Hamburg. “Me and Pete and the entire Best family were completely devastated to learn of the death of one of our closest family friends, Chas Newby. Many know him from playing bass in The Beatles or The Quarrymen, but to us he was just laid back Chase with a big smile,” wrote Roag Best.
Newby played with The Barmen and then The Black Jacks with Pete Best, drummer for The Beatles. It was he who initiated joint concerts of the band with a bassist friend. The musician played four concerts with the rock legends and returned to Hamburg. However, the group was very happy with this short collaboration. John Lennon was about to offer Newby to stay with the band permanently, but he refused.
After concerts with the Beatles, the bassist returned to his studies, and in 2012, in an interview with the Sunday Mercury, he emphasized that music had never been his idea of life. When Newby refused to perform any more concerts with the Beatles, the musicians had to find another solution. John Lennon and George Harrison declined to become bassists, and Paul McCartney took over the four-string guitar.
Charles Newby was born on June 18, 1941. Instead of playing bass in the Beatles, he became a math teacher at Droitwich Spa High School. He spent the last years of his life in Alcester, where he played in the group The Racketts playing charity concerts.
