“Megan Is Missing” is about the disappearance of a 14-year-old girl who disappears after meeting a stranger she met online. The further plot focuses on the efforts of her friend, who is trying hard to find her. The production was low-budget ($45,000) and was one of the first to use the perspective of a computer screen for narration.
The disturbing horror traumatized thousands of viewers. Even the director warned against it
The director used recordings from webcams usually used in chat rooms, home recordings and fragments of television reports to tell the story of disturbing cases of the disappearance of young girls. The film hit the cinemas in 2011, but when it was discovered by a new generation of viewers, the title became a TikTok sensation. Materials on the platform placed on the subpage bearing the name of the production have.
The film turned out to be so brutal and filled with sequences showing clearly disturbing scenes of sexual violence that, although it was a blockbuster after its theatrical release, it was banned by the relevant authority in New Zealand. Representatives of the Film and Literature Classification Bureau decided that the picture was harmful. “The film shows the sexual violence and sexual activity of young people in such an extremely visual and so disturbing way that the availability of the production is likely to be harmful to society,” said a spokesperson for the Daily Mail. The journalist also points out in the latest publication that “Megan is Missing” is still available to watch in Australia via Amazon Prime – discs with the film are also available for sale on the EZYDVD website.
Max Aitchison, in a text dated May 15, 2023, points out that the horror website has a rating of 4.6/10 and is described as “one of the most disturbing movies ever made”. You can also read an excerpt from Zoe Rose Smith’s review, which notes that it is “a very painful insight into the reality of vulnerability, the devastating effects of online solicitation and the truth about what happens to people who are unlucky and become victims of the grace of degenerates who personify pure evil.
Michael Goi, the director of the film, had to post a video in which he personally warns against watching “Megan is Missing” alone after the title of the production went viral on TikTok. In the video shown by several million people, he emphasized:
I didn’t get a chance to give you the warnings that viewers of Megan Is Missing would normally get. And it reads as follows: Do not watch this movie at night. Don’t watch it alone. And if you see the words ‘photo number one’ on the screen, you have about five seconds to turn off the video if you’re starting to get scared, because then you’ll see things you might not want to see at all.
Thousands of teenagers and teenagers from around the world began to really reach for extremely violent production and upload their videos showing reactions after the screening or montages with selected scenes on the platform. – user bella.clare wrote “Watch this movie at your own risk. I’m forever traumatized” and h4ndfullofaids stresses: “Right now I literally feel like I’ll never leave the house again. I haven’t even finished watching it, I still have 15 minutes left, but already I feel a wild revulsion.” The Independent quotes other statements in a similar tone: “This movie makes me stare at the wall and I want to delete all my social media accounts and never come back”, “I can’t stop crying and I feel like I’m going to vomit. If I don’t already you’ve seen it, don’t do it. It’s scary,” we reported on viewers’ reactions a few years ago.
The Daily Mail journalist also warns that if a video with the words “Photo number one” appears on our screen, we only have four seconds to turn off the video – soon after, images appear that are particularly terrifying, especially of people who who are already starting to be afraid and are extremely sensitive – we read in the text.
