Will more seniors get free drugs? The government is preparing changes

So far, in order for seniors to be able to take advantage of free medicines prescribed by a specialist doctor, they often had to visit a primary care physician. For this reason, many of them resigned from reimbursement. The upcoming changes will make this process much easier.

Seniors over 75 who are covered by health insurance are entitled to free medicines for old age diseases. To obtain them, however, you need a prescription with a special label. What needs to be done and what changes will appear in the program?

How to hold free medicines? A senior who is over 75 years old and is covered by health insurance should go to a doctor for a prescription with a special marking. We are talking about the letter “S” entered in the “additional authorization code” field. In addition, of course, a given drug must be in , and the patient himself should have an indication for reimbursement, i.e. have a specific disease. A prescription can be prescribed by a doctor or primary health care nurse.

Like “Fact”, also a specialist doctor can issue a prescription for free . However, there is one snag. However, for this to happen, the senior must first agree to have access to his medical records. How? By checking the appropriate box after logging into the patient’s online account. Many seniors, however, are not aware of it, so after a visit to a specialist doctor, they receive written information from him about the diagnosed disease and the recommended treatment, with which they must go to the general practitioner. Only he can issue a prescription for free drugs on this basis.

Changes to the regulations are promised. What can seniors expect?

Changes that are to streamline the entire process and make it easier for specialists to issue prescriptions for free drugs have been announced for months. It is not known when they will be introduced. – We are analyzing the possibility of transferring these provisions to other acts currently being processed. We plan that such an amendment will be included in one of the regulations that will be discussed in the Sejm in May or July, said Deputy Minister of Health Maciej Miłkowski. In addition, the government has announced lowering the age at which free drugs would be available to 60 instead of 75. As the PiS president said, it is possible that this will happen early next year, but the exact date and other details are not yet known.
