In March 2021, information appeared that Artur Orzech would no longer work with TVP as the host of “Chances for Success”. He has not commented on Eurovision on TVP for four years. However, he does not resign from participating in the competition – he also shared his observations during the report on his YouTube channel this year. In an interview with Onet, he commented, among others: the idea of the organizers for the participants to sing in the “accompaniment” of pre-recorded choirs. Walnut called it “exaggeration”, but also used stronger words.
Artur Orzech about the backing vocals: In my opinion, it’s a scandal
– I am very disturbed by this. During this year’s final, it happened that three choristers stood on the stage, and we heard eight voices. I think it’s a scandal – says Orzech. In his opinion, it is for this reason that it is hard to admire the progress that many believe Blanka made between winning the Polish pre-selection in February this year and the semi-final or final of Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool. – Perhaps some [postęp – red.] it is, but because of these Eurovision changes, thanks to which the main vocal can be protected by other voices recorded on tape, including the voice of the lead singer or vocalist, it is difficult to tell. When the voice is passed through the appropriate equalization systems, it undoubtedly supports the lead vocal, he claims, believing that technology has intruded too much on Eurovision.
It is worth noting that until 1998, i.e. for the first few years when Artur Orzech was the commentator on TVP, the participants were played by an orchestra. Edyta Górniak, who was the first in history to represent Poland, was accompanied on stage by Noel Kelehan, who later also played during Justyna Steczkowska’s performance. The conductors of the Polish participants were also Krzesimir Dębski and Wiesław Pieregorólka.
Eurovision without a jury? According to Orzech, that would be a mistake
Overdubbed backing vocals are not the only changes that have recently been seen in the competition. Eurovision 2023 is the first event in which the winner was decided not only by national jurors and viewers of individual countries-participants of the competition, but also by those from around the world. And although Lorren won, the representative of Finland received the most votes from the audience watching what was happening in Liverpool. There have been voices (not for the first time) that it may be time to resign from the jury. However, Artur Orzech has a different opinion. – I am a strong opponent of embedding the Eurovision criterion solely in the votes of TV viewers, because there are millions of them, and not all of them are professionals. Sometimes those who go against the flow have more say than those who go with the flow, he says.
Blanka with the song “Solo” took 19th place. Next year the competition will be held in Sweden. It is very likely that Aleksander Sikora and Marek Sierocki will once again comment on him on TVP.
