“Solo”. How would Blanka’s hit sound in Polish? “Now I’ll show you, show you, show you what you’re missing”

Solo, solo… sings Blanka, the Polish representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. This word sounds the same in Polish and in English. And what would the song sound like if it was sung entirely in our language?

Michał Rusinek, author of many books for adults and children, literary scholar, translator, writer, doctor of humanities, professor of the Jagiellonian University, former secretary of Wisława Szymborska, read the Polish version of Blanka’s Solo. He only changed the verbs – for him on Tik Toku it’s a male version, we give it closer to the original:

Baby, that’s a little crazy, how else to put it? I lost my mind with you. Baby, what happened to you? I thought I knew you, but now it’s time to face it. You are hot and cold. You’re tall and you’re short. I play with my mind. No, oh, oh, it doesn’t work like that, so let me spell it out. Now I’m better solo, solo. I never let myself down didi dam dam dam. Now I’ll show you, I’ll show you, I’ll show you what you’re missing – we hear on the recording.

Solo in Polish is recited not only by Michał Rusinek

This is not the first time someone has faced the translation of a Polish representative’s song. For some time, a video has also been circulating on the web, in which the text is read with the voice of Jakub Rutka. Let us add that the translation is not literary, but literal.

The song “Solo” was written and composed by Blanka Stajkow, Maria Broberg, Julia Sundberg, Maciej Puchalski, Mikołaj “Tribbs” Trybulec, Bartłomiej Rzeczycki and Marcin Górecki. The recording has already received platinum single status in Poland, which is awarded for 50,000 copies sold. A music video was made for “Solo” directed by Blanka and Magic Mars. Blanka presented the song in the second semi-final of Eurovision 2023 and also reached the final of the competition.
