It is no secret that the organizers of the event have much more liberal views than the managers of Polish national television, who are followers of traditionalist values. So the moment was embarrassing when three drag queens appeared on stage during the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest – their outfits imitated the costumes of the journalists leading the party.
Drag queens came on stage TVP commentators fell silent
Since Eurovision has not been commented on by Artur Orzech, TVP has had trouble meeting the tastes of viewers accustomed to the journalist’s participation. Although Marek Sierocki and Aleksander Sikora try to report the event in their own way, they are not necessarily free to do so. Aleksander Sikora translates e.g. what the hosts of the event say, and Marek Sierocki reads the announcements of the next artists. In addition, there are technical difficulties – in the comments, fans point out that TVP has problems with the sound, so the commentators cannot be heard clearly. “While the latter was partly audible, in the second semi-final there are problems with hearing the Polish translation of what Alesha Dixon, Julija Sanina, Hannah Waddingham say from the stage,” reported Marta Korycka.
During the artistic program, after all the performances of the semi-finalists, Aleksander Sikora could not be heard again. This time, however, the reason was not technical glitches, but rather what was happening on stage. The organizers decided that three drag queens will perform in front of the audience, whose costumes will refer to what Alesha Dixon, Julija Sanina and Hannah Waddingham performed at the event in Liverpool. Then also Sikora seemed to freeze – he just fell silent. Let us emphasize that drag queens are performers dressed as women. Eurovision.tv says:

The artists presented their entire routine and only then Aleksander Sikora began to translate their words sparingly. “We feel fantastic, we feel free,” said one of the artists, which the TVP journalist sparingly translated into his native language. Later, Hannah Waddingham jokingly asked for directions to the performers’ stylist, which the TVP commentator translated equally minimally. Viewers were able to listen to the discussions in English to a large extent.

Representing Poland, Blanka with the song “Solo” got to the final of the Eurovision Song Contest. Viewers watching the competition can vote for their favorites in several ways, although they must remember that they cannot vote for their representatives.

This year, all performers will receive points from three separate pools – from professional jurors, from the European audience and for the first time from viewers around the world.
