29-year-old Käärijä, or Jere Poyhonen, is a singer and rapper from Helsinki. In his work, he does not limit himself to one style, cleverly combining electronics, pop, rock and old-school hip-hop. However, as he himself indicates, his work was greatly influenced by the music of the Rammstein band, whose symbol he even tattooed on his left breast.
He has serious health problems. When he overcame them, he completely changed his life
He took up music professionally in 2014, when he learned to play the drums and began his career as a music producer. In the same year, his health deteriorated greatly. He developed ulcerative colitis, which was life-threatening. The artist underwent surgery to remove the large intestine at an express pace. In interviews, he often confesses that it was a turning point in his life. Since then, he has been happy to talk about his experiences in the fight against the disease and tries to raise awareness of the need to perform preventive examinations among his recipients.
He found out about his illness by accident. The first symptoms appeared when he was still attending high school, but the real problems began after he turned 18. Käärijä then started consuming alcohol and partying. Before the operation, the musician was hospitalized in a very bad condition. According to the doctors, it was a miracle that he survived, and delaying hospitalization would have led to the infection spreading to the rest of the intestines, which would have led to the death of the artist.
After recovering, he stated that he would pursue music professionally. But he managed to release his debut album “Fantastista” only in 2020. And three years later, he entered the Finnish qualifiers for Eurovision 2023 – Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu. He applied there with the song “Cha Cha Cha”, which he wrote together with Alexi Nurmi and Johannes “Kiro” Naukkarinen, who have a lot of success on their account. In the song you can hear the interpenetration of genres typical for the artist. Also the Eurovision performance was very eclectic. On the stage in Liverpool we will see elements of ballroom dancing, a characteristic neon jacket and … wooden pallets.
The Finn aroused great admiration during the first semi-final of Eurovision, so it should not be surprising that he advanced to the final, which will take place on May 13. Viewers from Poland were also impressed by the skills, who willingly shared their opinions on the Internet. “Do I have to say who will trample all these representatives?”, “Okay, Finland wins, you can leave. The longest applause of the evening”, “Finland is one of the favorites this year” – wrote Polish fans of the competition. We will find out on Saturday whether the Finn will win.
