Entering the church with your beloved, in your dream dress and in the company of your loved ones, to seal your relationship, is a moment full of emotions and emotions. Many future brides are waiting for this moment. An additional highlight of this moment is usually the music, the choice of which is often a challenge for women. It turns out, however, that while in the case of a civil wedding, the choice is free, in the case of a church wedding it is not so colorful. Many songs associated with weddings have been banned in churches for some time.
Young couples will not be pleased. The Church reminds: Music in the liturgy is not its “setting”
She recently reminded me of this. On the website, the Instruction of the Polish Episcopate Conference on church music was made available, in which a request was made to the clergy and church musicians to pay attention to the nature and form of music that is played in churches.
As the instruction says, music in the liturgy is not its “setting”, but is integrally connected with the celebration of sacred rites. In particular, we ask you to pay attention to the selection of songs, chants and compositions performed during ritual Holy Masses with the sacrament of marriage or funeral masses. It is very common to encounter an inappropriate approach to the liturgical and musical norms in force in the Church. The Commission reminds that situations in which music becomes a kind of concert and dominates the dynamics and essence of liturgical rites should be abandoned. Frequently, when preparing a wedding or a funeral, engaged couples, family or relatives invite people who advertise in social media, but who do not know liturgical regulations or even musical or vocal qualifications, to perform music in the liturgy. We would also like to remind you that under no circumstances can you perform secular music during the liturgy.
What songs can young couples forget about at the wedding? List of songs banned in the church
As stated in the message, no secular music may be performed during the mass. Young couples can therefore forget about the use of songs such as:
- “Ave Maria” by Johann Sebastian Bach,
- Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”
- “Mother’s Heart” by Mieczysław Fogg,
- “All You Need Is Love” by The Beatles,
- “Love Is In The Air” by John Paul Young,
- Perfect by Ed Sheeran
- You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban
- “Let them say it’s not love” by Piotr Rubik.
