It is jokingly said that you don’t get the communion money until your child receives the sacrament. We asked passers-by we met on the streets of Warsaw if they knew where their First Communion envelopes had disappeared. While some said they’ve never seen the cash, some know what the money was spent on.

Communion season is in full swing. After months of preparation, the children will finally receive the sacrament and receive the Eucharist for the first time. This important event for Catholic families in 2023 is associated with grand celebrations. More and more parents decide to rent a room in a restaurant and prepare a festive dinner for their loved ones. Gifts are also festive. The survey we conducted on the streets of Warsaw shows that many people decide to give valuable gifts or envelopes with cash. The latter arouse mixed feelings, because they usually do not reach the hands of children. We asked the inhabitants of the capital what happened to their communion money. Many people think that a better solution than giving a child an envelope is to buy a gift that will be a souvenir for years.

Can parents appropriate their child’s communion money?

Attorney Ɓukasz Skiba explained in the “We have time” program that a parent cannot take communion money from a child and spend it as he pleases. He has a duty to look after the child’s property, just as he looks after a child.

All the money can be spent, but it must be done for the child’s purposes
