Eurovision 2023. Croatia gave the strangest performance of the evening. And she circumvented the ban on politics

Croatia sent a very eccentric group Let 3 to the 67th edition of Eurovision. This is one of the most characteristic Croatian bands, whose profile is somewhat reminiscent of our Big Cyc. The musicians went to the international competition with a song that mocks the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenka – although the text does not mention the names, the context is obvious. Added to this was a rather surprising stage show.

On May 9, 2023, the first semi-final concert of the 67th edition took place. That evening, representatives of Serbia, Latvia, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Portugal, Malta, Moldova, Switzerland, Israel, the Netherlands, Finland, the Czech Republic, Azerbaijan and Croatia performed. It was an exceptionally strong group and very good proposals, but the Croatian representation in particular stood out from the rest of the artists – undoubtedly the Let 3 group are very eccentric performers.

The first semi-final of Eurovision 2023. The Croatians gave the most crazy performance

“Croatia does not take prisoners. We have the comfort that we will understand most of the song as Poles without any problems, and yes, the lyrics of this song mean nothing more than “Mom bought a tractor”. Does TVP see it? – she reported on the course of the performance for Gazeta.pl. The song “Mama ŠC” is an anti-war song with obvious references to Vladimir Putin, who in the lyrics is called, for example, “Little, reptilian, mean psychopath” who started the war. However, no specific name is mentioned, thanks to which the words of the song remain appropriately metaphorical and do not contradict the Eurovision regulations on the ban on politics.

Why do Croats sing about a tractor? Potentially, this is about the fact that Vladimir Putin gave Alexander Lukashenko a tractor, although it could also be a reference to a war incident in Ukraine – the media around the world reported that Ukrainian Roma towed Russian tanks with tractors.

No less striking was the visual setting of the performance – mostly bearded or mustached musicians appeared on stage in very campy and provocative costumes. Some of them were dressed in uniforms with pleated skirts, and the rest had colorful coats and hats referring to fascist uniforms. In the background, psychedelic animations depicting, for example, a march of clowns dressed in green tracksuits were displayed. In addition, the band members presented a choreography referring to pedaling on a bicycle and military marches. At the very end, they took off their uniforms and played in only T-shirts and underwear, a man wearing dummy rockets (a reference to atomic bombs) in a black long coat also walked around the stage. Let’s add that he was dressed up like Lenin. The viewers appreciated it, Croatia got to the finals and was even read out first.

On May 11, the second semi-final will take place – that’s when Blanka, representing Poland, will perform with the song “Solo”. She will compete for participation in the final with representatives of Armenia, Cyprus, Romania, Denmark, Belgium, Iceland, Greece, Estonia, Albania, Australia, Austria, Lithuania, San Marino, Slovenia and Georgia.
