Why was it not possible to see the anointing of King Carlos III

The Archbishop of Canterbury, James Welby, officiated at the anointing of King Charles III with consecrated oils that confirmed the divine character of the contemplated moment of communion between God and the new sovereign. For this reason, no one else can see this part of the ceremony.

The king sat in the coronation chair for anointing with holy oil, and the choir sang Handel’s famous coronation hymn “Priest Zadok”.

In order not to see the moment of anointing, a canopy or screen was used, specially embroidered with beautiful and symbolic motifs.

The procedure consisted of putting some oil on the hands, head and chest (at heart level) of the monarch.

In accordance with the spirit of modernity that characterized the ceremony, at the request of King Carlos III, oil made only from plant elements was used in the anointing, Gastrolab details.

The oil was harvested from two groves on the Mount of Olives and consecrated in a special ceremony in Jerusalem earlier this year, the Royal House said.

Tradition indicated the use of “an oil made from elements extracted from the anal glands of the civet and compounds obtained from whales.” But King Carlos III, in keeping with the modernity of his coronation which rejects cruelty to animals, requested vegan oil.

This is why the holy ointment is made from olives from Jerusalem olive trees and specially scented with essential oils of different plants.
