Almost a week has passed since the screenwriters and writers of the film industry in the United States They went on strike. Some of their demands are better wages, longer contracts and studios to address the growing trend of artificial intelligence by doing their job.

Although the writers’ union and the representatives of the major studios and streaming platforms have not yet reached an agreement, the imminent threat of artificial intelligence has become one of the main points of discussion between both parties and other members of the entertainment industry.

Chatbots, such as the popular ChatGPT, have already shown that they can generate content in seconds from all the material they collect on the web. This system is capable of generating a script, writing a plot based on a slogan or correcting a text.

He Writers Guild of America (WGA) says it lobbied studios to have conversations about using artificial intelligence before the strike. The union wants no robot production to qualify as “literary” or “source material,” terms that imply copyright payments. It also wants to prevent scripts written by its members from being used to train an AI.

The union explained that the studios “rejected” the proposal and instead proposed an annual meeting “discuss technological progress”but the writers find it offensive that studios and platforms are willing to explore the subject of artificial intelligence.

The fear of the union’s 11,500 writers is that executives are willing to make creative compromises to improve profitability.

However, that does not mean that the writers are against the advancement of artificial intelligence. For Leila Cohan, who wrote the hit series “Bridgerton,” the only use for an AI could be to assign it “tedious tasks” or random tasks, such as suggesting character names.

But the 39-year-old screenwriter fears studios will be tempted to first draft “incredibly bad AI” scripts and then hire screenwriters to rewrite them.

“We’re not totally against AI,” said Michael Winship, president of the WGA’s Eastern Branch, a journalist and documentary filmmaker. “There are ways it can be useful. But too many people use it against us and use it to create mediocrity. They also violate copyright. They also plagiarize.”
