“Krawiec” is the story of Peyami, a young, talented and renowned tailor who inherited from his grandfather not only talent, but also a profitable business. The first few minutes of the show break the stereotypical idea many people have of Turkish series. Right after we zoom in on the main character, we see a model walking around in a thong, and then we have another woman’s exposed breasts, a copulation scene in the back room of a fashion show, and snorting cocaine. However, the creators quickly juxtapose the contemporary world of urban fashion (or rather its exaggerated image) with tradition and the past.
“
Melodramatic crap with a ridiculous plot” hit Netflix
The main character returns to his family home, where people call him “master”, for the funeral of his beloved grandfather. His death will significantly affect his life, because after the consolidation, the tailor must take his grandmother with him to Istanbul and – as we read in the production description – “his greatest secret, where he must take care of him so that no one discovers the truth.” It is a father with an intellectual disability – Mustafa. In the life of Peyami and Mustafa there is also Esvet, who is running away from a toxic relationship with the spoiled rich and obviously evil Dimitri.
The main role in the seven-episode series shot in Turkey’s largest city, created by Onur Güvenatam, is played by Ça?atay Ulusoy, who previously appeared in the Netflix “The Protector”. Sleek, distant, sometimes reminiscent of Colin Firth, the actor – and former model – in the role of Peyami will have to face the past, as well as the secrets hidden by people around him. And how is he doing? Well, we can’t really rely on Rotten Tomatoes, because it’s the only review there, but if we look at it, it’s not good:
The Tailor is melodramatic junk, with a ridiculous plot that will likely generate even more eye-rolls during its seven-episode season, Joel Keller of The Decider writes after watching an incomplete first season.
“The Tailor” – will there be a second season? Despite the bad reviews, even more
“Just watching a series with such extreme themes is exhausting” – . Pramit Chatterjee from Digital Mafia Talkies also equals production to the ground. “If someone had told me that the entire script was written by an AI that was encouraged to come up with a boring serialized version of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Ghost Thread, I would totally believe it. Everything about this show is so robotic and banal that it really doesn’t seem like a human could create it even on the worst day.”
On balance, Jonathon Wilson of Ready Steady Cut describes The Tailor as “surprisingly engrossing.” “It’s an ostensibly true story, but wonderfully silly. It’s sometimes romantic but never sexy, and often suspenseful, always completely averse to depth. Some will hate the show. won’t solve the threads.”
However, as it often happens, viewers decide for themselves and it seems that Polish Netflix users are drawn into this very dark and extreme emotion story. The past of Gulseren Budayicioglu, who before becoming a writer, worked as a psychiatrist, is also significant for the climate of the production. The screenplay was based on her book Hayata Dön. Those who are drawn to the story will probably be pleased with the fact that three seasons of “Krawiec” are planned.
