The lawn in the garden goes into oblivion. Maja Popielarska tells you how to save time and water

Most garden owners dream of a lush green and beautiful lawn, but keeping it in an impeccable condition requires a lot of work and huge amounts of water. Journalist Maja Popielarska in an interview with “Wirtualna Polska” suggested an ecological alternative to a lawn in the garden.

A well-kept lawn is the home’s showcase, but not everyone has enough time to care for it. It turns out that instead of an evenly trimmed lawn, we can give plants more freedom. Maja Popielarska told “Wirtualna Polska” how to save time and water and why it is not worth investing in maintaining a lawn in the garden.

Maintaining a lawn is not eco-friendly. “Is the game worth the candle?”

Maja Popielaska is the author of the program “Maja in the Garden”. A gardening journalist argues that a lawn is not an essential element of every garden. Keeping it in impeccable condition requires a lot of time and work. It does not tolerate heat and high temperatures well, so it needs to be watered regularly, which is not the most ecological solution these days. Contrary to appearances, lawn care is time-consuming and expensive. It requires regular work, including scarifying, pruning, fertilizing and watering. We are facing a serious water deficit. So you have to consider whether the game is worth the candle – said Maja Popielarska in an interview with the “” portal. In addition, weeds and other unwanted plants need to be removed from the lawn, which requires a lot of energy and work. An ecological alternative to this may be a turf, i.e. a grass community, where plants popularly known as weeds also grow.

Maja Popielarska argues not to remove weeds and moss from the garden. “It is of great importance in the accumulation of water in the soil”

Turf is not only grass, but also other green elements that we most often pull out during lawn care. It is more resistant to high temperatures and does not require as many treatments. The journalist argued that weeds occur naturally in nature, and in gardens they can be as attractive as lawns. She also emphasized that we should not remove moss from the garden, as it is of great importance in the accumulation of water in the soil. “Moss spawns where there is hard ground and not enough light. Its presence is a signal to the garden owner that the lawn should not grow in this particular place. In addition, it is a great reservoir of water. Removing it with chemistry only disturbs the ecosystem,’ she explained.
