The 32-year-old from Vitoria Benat Garaio Mendizabal has won the Eusko Ikaskuntza – Laboral Kutxa Gazte Saria award for his project “Kia ora, takatapui: maoriera eta euskararen biziberritze prozesuak elkarlotzen”in which, “using an innovative methodology and with the support of Anglo-Saxon sociolinguistics, it seeks to relate the processes of revitalization of Euskera and the Maori language in New Zealand”, according to the prize jury.

The prize is awarded annually to the best creative or research projects proposed by young people under 35 years of age in the areas of Humanities, Culture, Arts or Social Sciences.

BeƱat Garaio Mendizabal (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1990) trained in education, specializing in Sociolinguistics in the Language Support and Revitalization master’s degree at the SOAS University of London (School of Oriental and African Studies), and in the postgraduate course in HIZNET Language Planning .

Since 2014 he has published more than sixty articles. He currently works as a researcher and project developer for various institutions through the Biziherri IGB civil association.

The winning project of the Eusko Ikaskuntza-LABORAL Kutxa Gazte Saria 2023, awarded with 6,000 euros, is expected to be carried out with different actions until the end of 2024.
