Earth Day. Where did the idea to celebrate such a day come from?
Earth Day – the idea for such a holiday was first put forward by John McConnell. This was announced at the UNESCO conference in 1969. This idea met with approval and was supported, for example, by the Secretary General of the United Nations, U Thant. Finally, in 2009, the UN General Assembly announced the establishment of an annual date for International Mother Earth Day. The festival was celebrated for the first time in 2010.
How is World Earth Day celebrated in schools?
It is important to teach children from an early age, and Earth Day is the perfect day to talk openly about all the problems related to the pollution of the planet: water, air, soil. Children also learn greenhouse effect or acid rain. On World Earth Day, you can also take action to change your habits – it’s worth starting with small things, such as cleaning the surrounding parks, forests or streets. And often this is how children help to care for the environment. They go in whole classes to help with . Then they can really see how big the problem is.
Is Earth Day also celebrated in kindergarten? What else do children learn?
Children are our future and depending on what they are taught now, they will act and decide on certain actions later on. Therefore, even in kindergartens, Earth Day is celebrated. Older children can successfully help in local waste collection campaigns, e.g. in the park. In turn, the younger one learns the correct behavior with the help of various appeals, meetings about:
- what is recycling,
- how to take care of trees, land or water.
Competitions, games, actions and even performances are organized in schools, libraries and other educational institutions to teach the youngest how to take care of our planet. This is a very right initiative and it is good to support it and educate children in this area, also independently.
When do we celebrate Earth Day?
The date when we celebrate Earth Day was set at the already mentioned UN General Assembly. It was then decided that this day would be April 22.
When do we celebrate World Earth Day? Are there any events?
Yes – and not only in schools or kindergartens! On this day you can find many interesting lectures, lectures and presentations on theme of ecology and caring for the environment. Nowadays, many of them also take place online. Most of these types of actions are also free, because the idea here is the good of the planet, which should be a common good for everyone. When we celebrate World Earth Day, you can also help clean forests, beaches or nearby parks or other places where such collective actions are organized. Planting trees or other plants is also a beautiful initiative. So everyone who cares about the fate of Mother Earth will find something for themselves. It is also good to develop ecological habits that will stay with us not only on this one day, such as waste segregation, using second-hand items, using ecological transport, etc.
