Viewers loved him as Kargula in “Alone”. The director at the beginning “dropped hands”

They will be back on screens soon. According to the portal, the shooting of the prequel to the cult comedy, which will be directed by Artur Żmijewski, has begun. It was in this film many years ago that Władysław Hańcza created the legendary character of Kargul, for which he was loved by millions of viewers.

He made his stage debut before the war. The role of Kargul opened the door to his career

Despite his great passion for literature and theatre, Władysław Hańcza never planned to become an actor. Initially, he was supposed to be a textile worker, but eventually he began studying Polish philology. After a year of education, however, he decided to give up his chosen path and enrolled in the Dramatic School in Poznań. Soon after, he debuted on stage, presenting his extraordinary skills and predispositions. Critics quickly hailed him as one of the most promising actors.

Although the war interrupted his career, right after its end he made his screen debut as a camp kapo in the film Two Hours. He had about 40 titles to his credit. Although he usually played supporting characters, he was able to outshine the other cast members with his charisma, distinctive voice and diction. The most important acting role in his career was the character of Władysław Kargul in the comedy trilogy directed by “Sami swoi”, “Nie ma mocnych” and “Love or throw”. “Acting, in my opinion, is not about impersonation. It’s about expressing the content of the role through your own individuality. It is the privilege and duty of an actor. Otherwise, it’s a declamation.

He couldn’t speak an Eastern dialect. The director made a risky decision

However, the beginnings in the role of Kargul were quite a challenge for the actor. Wacław Kowalski, who played Pawlak in “On Your Own”, suggested to the director the idea that the characters of the production should speak with an Eastern accent. Despite the best efforts, Hańcza’s dialect did not sound good. – When I heard Kargul, that is Władysław Hańcza, say, my hands fell. It was something completely different. Two heroes and two different languages. What sounded funny in Kowalski’s mouth was pathetic in Hańcza’s mouth – he recalled in an interview with the portal Naszemiasto.pl, emphasizing that it was clear that Hańcza was not a peasant, he was just pretending to be.

The director thought for a long time what to do in this situation. Finally, he decided that another actor, Bolesław Płotnicki, should provide the voice for Kargul during post-synchronous recordings. By coincidence, Hańcza was struggling with an illness during the recordings, so he was forced, albeit reluctantly, to agree to it. As soon as he recovered, he set to work. He practiced his diction, regularly working out his dialect. The effects were astonishing. After only a few weeks it was certain that in the next parts of the series, Hańcza’s replacement would not be necessary.
