“Instead of a communion envelope, I gave my godson a gift. My friends were offended”

Nowadays, instead of gifts on the occasion of First Holy Communion, most people decide to give children an envelope with money. However, not everyone. One of our readers shared a story that happened to her during the communion of her friends’ daughter, whose godmother she is.

I don’t know if it’s just me who gets this impression, but with each passing year, the issue of communion gifts exceeds the limits of absurdity. Recently, I heard that buying, for example, holidays in Greece for children and parents has become a trend. Really?! After all, once gifts were symbolic and were an addition to the sacrament of First Holy Communion. Today I feel they are the highlight. What’s more, some parents only want envelopes or totally abstract gifts like this holiday. I found out about it myself last year.

All because instead of an envelope for communion, I gave my goddaughter a gift. Friends were offended that instead of money I decided to give her … a bicycle! I remember the piercing eyes of my friends when they saw me and my husband pulling a big box out of the car. Interestingly, my goddaughter was very happy with the gift. She even told me that was what she dreamed of. Her mother’s reaction was completely incomprehensible to me. After all, it was not just any gift, but a city bike of a well-known brand with a charming basket on the handlebar for over PLN 1,000.

After a few days, I decided to ask if everything was okay with the bike. I also added that if something happened, they should let me know, because the bike is under warranty. However, I didn’t get any answers. Some time after that, I found out from mutual friends that my goddaughter’s mother complained to everyone that she got a gift from us, not money, as was the case with the godfather and other guests. Apparently, that’s why he doesn’t want to keep in touch with me. I was very surprised because her daughter was delighted!
