How many hours do we spend on beauty care? Poles are leading in one of the categories

According to research, on average, each of us spends 4 hours a day taking care of our beauty. The inhabitants of 93 countries were examined. What was Poland’s position? The results may be surprising to say the least.

In the age of social media, more and more people may feel pressured to take care of their appearance. When we look good, we also feel much better about ourselves. As a result, our well-being and mood improve. Taking care of our image, we can gain more energy to act and motivation. We also start to accept ourselves and our possible imperfections. But what does it look like statistically? See how much time we spend on taking care of our appearance.

How many hours a day do we spend taking care of our beauty? Poland in the middle of the pack

Evolution and Human Behavior is a bi-monthly scientific journal. In the last of them appeared , which determined the average time that people spend on taking care of their beauty and image. Various demographic factors influencing this were also taken into account. The method with the use of surveys was used, in which individual fragments appeared regarding:

  • physical activity and taking care of improving the figure,
  • taking care of diet, hygiene and prevention of visits to specialists,
  • everyday clothing and wardrobe items
  • taking care of hair and, in the case of men, facial hair,
  • applied cosmetics and make-up.

Almost all of the 93,158 admitted that they spent at least 10 minutes each day improving their appearance, but most took much longer. Compared to 93 other countries, Poland ranked above the average when it comes to taking care of diet and eating habits. Interestingly, our country’s average was lowered in terms of physical exercise and choice of clothes. Although Poland was among the top countries in Europe, overall it appeared in the middle of the pack. Tunisia, Thailand, Ghana, Nigeria, Dominican Republic, Colombia and Ecuador rank among the top three.

According to the evolutionary hypothesis, people want to look good to increase the chance of finding a suitable partner. The study found that both men and women spend an average of about four hours a day, or 1/6 of their lives, on behaviors aimed at increasing their physical attractiveness. It was also found that older people spend about the same amount of time as younger people improving their attractiveness. Like , scientists have noticed another relationship.

We found that people who considered themselves more attractive compared to less attractive spent more time improving their appearance, less time compared to more educated, those with higher versus lower socioeconomic status, and those with more right-wing political views.

Social media use appears to be the strongest predictor of attractiveness-enhancing behavior. Active social media users, in particular those who pursue unrealistic beauty standards, were found to be concerned when their photos receive fewer likes, so they spend more time improving their appearance than those who spend less or no time online.
