Mary Quant is considered one of the most important designers of the 20th century. She was the one who launched mini skirts in the 1960s. Although there is no evidence that she was their first creator, it is counted as her hallmark and one of the symbols that define the “swinging 60s.” in the UK.
Quant’s projects were sometimes considered controversial at the time, but it was her ideas that changed the established canons of femininity. Quant told an interview in 2014 about how she launched the fashion for miniskirts:
It was the girls of King’s Road who invented miniskirts. I made clothes that allowed you to run and dance, and we made them in the length that the clients wanted. I used to wear short ones and my clients would say ‘shorter, shorter’
The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where an exhibition dedicated to her achievements was shown in 2019, also reacted to the death of the designer. “Quant’s contribution to fashion cannot be overstated. She represented the exhilarating freedom of 1960s fashion and created a new role model for young women. Today’s fashion owes much to her groundbreaking vision,” the statement reads.
Bazaar opened its first store in 1955. It was one of the first London boutiques to offer an innovative approach to shopping. The boutique was open until late, loud music was heard in the premises and you could get free drinks. For her work, Quant was awarded an OBE in 1966. Of course, she wore a miniskirt to the gala.
