Communion bike? Survivor! From now on, Poles bet on “living toys”

Bicycles, quads and other valuable items are – as it turns out – obsolete. Poles are already betting on bolder ideas. On the occasion of First Holy Communion and other important celebrations, they buy live animals as gifts – for example, monkeys or lemurs. Many people do not realize how much harm it can cause to an animal.

– Monkeys are intelligent, extremely gregarious. Keeping a single individual is abuse, says veterinarian and non-domestic animal specialist. However, people do not seem to care too much about it, because there is no shortage of people willing to buy a “living toy” on the occasion of their birthday or First Holy Communion.

“living toys”

For several years, more and more attention has been paid to the risks associated with buying a dog or cat as a Christmas gift. It may turn out to be inaccurate, as suggested by overcrowded shelters after Christmas. And when it seemed that one “trend” was going away, another appeared – as mentioned by “Gazeta Wyborcza”. It turns out that Poles they buy monkeys for different occasions and other wild animals, for example, for communion children. There is no shortage of advertisements, and therefore also applicants.

For beautiful eyes

Just take a few minutes to browse the search engine results on a popular website: “White-eared marmoset baby” – 6 thousand. zloty. “Monkey Tamarin Złotoręka” – 5 thousand. zloty. After a while, we will even find a “tamed lemur” for 20,000. zloty. The announcement in capital letters reads: “We reserve the right to refuse to import (sell) a lemur if we believe that the potential owner will not provide the lemur with a good home.” The problem is that – despite good intentions – the future owner may not know how to provide such an animal a home.

The large, eyes with which lemurs steal our hearts are actually adapted to the nocturnal lifestyle. “Forcing them to live during the day is like constantly bombarding them with a light bulb in their eyes, like they’re being interrogated.” It causes constant stress, but it can also lead to eye damage, says Łukasz Skomorucha, a veterinarian specializing in non-domesticated animals.

Double Threat

As experts emphasize, buying monkeys, lemurs and other wild animals as a gift is not a good idea. This can be dangerous both for the animal and for ourselves. Taking the baby away from its mother early may cause a number of behavioral disorders and, consequently, end up being bitten.

The little capuchin with big eyes that we see on social media videos, may even bite off a fingerif it is not provided with the right conditions for development. – It just looks so cute on Instagram photos. In fact, living with a monkey is very difficult – says “GW” Nadia Chlebicka from the Epicrates foundation.
