When on a walk we hear people calling: “Alex”, “Reks”, “Szarik” or “Lassie” – we immediately know that they want to call their quadrupeds. But sometimes we hear names that evoke consternation or disgust.

Choosing a name for your beloved pet can be a very difficult task. The owners want it to be original, resonant and have good associations. Often, however, common sense prevails over a sense of humor and unwitting dogs or cats end up with a surprising name.

“The whole neighborhood laughs”

One of the readers wrote to the editorial office ofwoman.gazeta.pl (name and surname for the editors’ attention)who decided to share with us her thoughts on pet names chosen by owners.

In my neighborhood lives a lady who named her dog Holota. Several times a day I hear him go for a walk with her and call out: Hołota!, Hołota! The whole neighborhood laughs when she calls the dog

– wrote the reader and said that recently she has been very often confronted with controversial names that the owners gave their pets.

It’s not the first time I’ve come across such a name. Once I heard the owners call Gbura i Świntucha. As if it were a competition for the most absurd name for a pet. Why are they doing this to them? Are there no standards or rules for pet names?

our reader ended her message.

What names should you choose for your pets?

There are no laws that govern choosing names for pets. However, there are unwritten rules about what pet names should not be given, and many people follow them. First of all, we don’t give dogs human names. Calling your beloved mongrel “Krzysztof” or “Alicja” sounds grotesque and would certainly expose its owner to jeers from others. You should also not choose offensive, vulgar names and insults. It is best to choose short, graceful names (two or three syllables).
