Do you remember the songs “Holidays with a blonde” or “Twenty-year-olds”? These are just two of many hits. When he achieved success in Poland, he decided to try his hand overseas as well. Although he was there and captivated the crowds, he spent the last years of his life in solitude.
He dreamed of an acting career. He made some big hits
Maciej Kossowski was born on February 11, 1937. His carefree childhood was interrupted by the war, but right after its end he began to develop in sports. After completing compulsory education, he began studying Polish philology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Soon after, doctors diagnosed him with erythema nodosum, and his stay in the hospital forced him to give up his passion. His new interest was playing the trumpet.
quickly became his passion. He took his first steps on the stage as a member of the band Combo 7, and after moving to Gdańsk, he began studying at a music school. At the same time, he tried his hand at acting, which was his big dream. Although he tried twice to get into the Łódź film school, he failed to obtain the index. Nevertheless, he performed in the student theater and on the stage of the Baltic Philharmonic. In the meantime, he joined the band Tralabomby, and later joined Czerwono-Czarni. “Bigbit wasn’t rock and roll. His character was different, he didn’t have much in common with real rock and roll. (…) our attitude was completely different from the attitude of a rock and roll man. We were a band that promoted new hits, we shaped popular music in Poland, but we sang rock and roll only to please the audience – in an interview for the book “Piosenkarze” by Emilia Padoł. After concerts abroad, he began to create his own compositions, and his, among others “Twenty-year-olds”, “It must always be a cloudy day” or “Agatko, kiss”, conquered the charts.
He made a career overseas. He died alone
When Kossowski was at the peak of his career, he decided to leave Czerwono-Czarni. For some time he created for others and developed a solo career. In 1969, after the success of the song “Wakacje z Blondką”, he decided to go to the USA, where his wife lived. Overseas, he performed as Mike Cossi for the Polish community, he also played on Broadway. However, it was in the Manhattan club that Lorelei found his most faithful listeners. His albums “Do you remember us two?” appeared on the phonographic market. and the English version “Do You Care To Remember?”.
Although he captivated crowds and had crowds of loyal fans, Maciej Kossowski spent the last years of his life alone. According to his longtime friend and neighbor, the musician lived alone and kept in regular contact with a few people. He died on October 30, 2022 in a hospital in New York. He was 85 at the time of his death.
At the time of his death, his family was not with him, the only people who knew that he was in the hospital were the doctor and me. For the past 10 years, he has led a solitary life, and I accidentally found out that I am the only person he keeps in touch with
Paul Radelat revealed. After the death of the singer, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in New York found his relatives. The family decided to bury Kossowski’s body in the family vault in the Hamptons.
