In the 1980s Teuber worked as a dental technician in a clinic near Darmstadt. It was then that he began to create in the basement of his house. As he himself mentioned in 2014, it allowed him to get away from the problems in his professional life. “I made escape games. It was my own world, created by me – he admitted in an interview with “Catan” magazine. It was not the only board game created by Teuber. He also published “Barbarossa” and “Drunter und Drüber”.

Settlers of Catan was released in 1995. The gameplay consists in expanding and developing a colony on an uninhabited island called Catan, built of hexagonal tiles representing forest, meadows, mountains, hills, desert and farmland. The game has gained immense popularity around the world, it has been translated into over 40 languages. In Germany alone, over 10 million copies (basic version and add-ons) have been sold in 15 years since its release. Already in 1998, Teuber left his job, because he believed that the project would be able to provide for the family. Catan gained even more popularity during the pandemic, when sales of board games increased.
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that the Teuber family announces that beloved husband and father Klaus Teuber passed away on April 1, 2023 at the age of 70 after a short and serious illness.
