Almost three decades have passed since the first episode of “Friends”. The series featured six friends in New York City facing life with a comedic critique of everyday events. Those were different times and what was seen as comedy in those days is now considered “offensive” by the new generations, as Jennifer Aniston, one of the protagonists, considers it.
The 54-year-old actress took advantage of the promotion of her latest film to reference the issue, offering AFP a statement that was later reviewed by Elle magazine. Here’s how the remembered Rachel Green came out after the criticism the series received on air on HBO Max.

For Jennifer Aniston, they used to be able to laugh at life without hurting sensibilities, but she believes audiences are more “sensitive” these days.
“The beauty of comedy is we laughed at ourselves, we laughed at life. You could joke about a bigot and laugh, it was hilarious. And it was about teaching people how ridiculous people were. And now we can’t do it,” he said.

Regarding the jokes audiences heard and liked during the ten seasons of the series, he said they had no intention of hurting anyone, though he finds many of them inappropriate these days.
“There’s a whole generation of people, kids, who watch ‘Friends’ episodes now and find them offensive,” Aniston says. “There were things that were never meant to be and others… well, we should have thought about it, but I don’t think there was a sensitivity like there is now,” he said.
The elle magazine He cites some of the criticism “Friends” has received today, mostly related to jokes about obese or overweight people and transgender people.

Like Jennifer Aniston, her co-star Lisa Kudrow, who played Phoebe Buffay, had already spoken out about the perceived lack of diversity in “Friends.” El País de España remembers his statements about this in 2020 when he advertised the Space Gorce series and they asked him what “Friends” would look like right now.
“Not all the protagonists would be white, that’s for sure,” he replied at the time, adding that it was a “very modern series for its time.”
