The director of the film is one of the most interesting Polish directors – Jan P. Matuszyński. The 38-year-old has such titles as “The Last Family”, “Let there be no traces” or the series Król. Grzegorz Łoszewski (“Komornik”, “Without Shame”) is responsible for the screenplay, and the cinematographer is Kacper Fretacz, who was awarded by the Polish Society of Cinematographers for the best cinematography in “The King”.
What will “Minghun” be about?
After losing his daughter, Jurek (Marcin Dorociński) and his father-in-law Ben (Daxing Zhang) decide to perform the Chinese minghun ritual, i.e. marriage after death. Heroes move? in metaphorical? and emotional journey full of turmoil? deep into themselves, the aim of which is to find the perfect partner for eternity for the deceased.
The clash of two very different cultures is to help make both the film characters and the viewer aware that, regardless of our origin, we all belong to one human family, where basic emotions are common.
»Minghun« is the story of a man dealing with trauma. The subject of spirituality, religion or transcendence is taken up in an original way, which does not smack of banality and is free of unambiguous connotations. It is also a story about love, and not directly, but at the same time »Minghun« is not devoid of romance. And it’s kind of existential, which I really like. It is also a very interesting relationship between men – Jerzy and his father-in-law, Ben, who is also from a different cultural background, which gives space for more interesting conversations and, consequently, scenes – comments director Jan P. Matuszyński
Starring Marcin Dorociński and Daxing Zhang. Who else will we see in “Minghun”?
Marcin Dorociński has been triumphing in international productions in recent years. “Minghun” is another project of this type in which he will take part. Previously, he starred in “The Queen’s Gambit”, then there was the second Netflix series “Vikings: Valhalla”, and soon we will see him on the big screen in “Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning”, where he starred alongside Tom Cruise.
He is partnered with Daxing Zhang, a Hollywood actor of Chinese descent who has participated in, among others, in The Matrix and Charlie’s Angels. The film also stars emerging stars of the young generation: Natalia Bui and Antek Sztaba. Ewelina Starejki, Wiktoria Gorodetckaja, Fenfen Huang, Kwong Loke, Yuk Han and Brid Ni Neachtain.
“Minghun” is an international project, the casting took place partly in the United States, Great Britain and France, and the characters communicate in Polish, English and Chinese. This is how the director of the film told what other titles and directors come to mind in the context of “Minghun”:
I have many associations with this project – from “Parasite”, which combines existential weight with lightness of story and space for a sense of humor, through Kieślowski’s films, to some items from the filmography of Michael Mann, which, despite the genre, often deeply explored the issues of loneliness and inevitability, and finally outstanding films about loss like “21 Grams” by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu or “Life Hidden in Words” by Isabel Coixet
The film was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute and the Gdańsk Film Fund, and Kino Świat is responsible for distribution. The producer of the film is the Wonder Films studio, which consists of winners of the most important Polish and world film awards and great cinema hits: Klaudiusz Frydrych (“Jack Strong”, “Psy 3. In the Name of Principles”, “Vulture”), Krzysztof Rak (“Corpus Christi”) “, “Gods”, “The Art of Loving”), and Inga Kruk (“Face”, “In the Name”).
