It was banned in the Catholic countries of South America. In Poland, it is a Netflix hit

Last weekend, the American horror film “Sanctuary” debuted on Netflix. However, it has only been made available in European countries. Due to the subject matter, the film was not approved by the censors in many Catholic countries of South America for theatrical distribution. In Poland, however, the film became extremely popular.

The film “The Unholy” was based on the novel “The Sacred Place” by James Herbert. It tells of a deaf girl who suddenly regains her hearing and speech and is able to heal the sick after she is visited by the Mother of God. Curious people come from everywhere, wanting to witness its miracles.

A disgraced journalist (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) comes to town to write a report about it, hoping to rebuild his career. In it, he wants to tell whether it is actually the Mother of God who performs miracles with the hands of the girl. When terrifying things suddenly begin to happen, she wonders if some dark forces are behind it.

Catholic countries did not allow the distribution of “Sanctuary”

The film received poor reviews online. Many people feel that it has untapped potential, and the most interesting plot of the film was not handled in the right way. It is also said that the creators were afraid to take up the theme completely at the beginning of the film, which makes “Sanctuary” an average horror film.

However, this did not stop the censors from several Catholic countries in South America, who did not allow the title to be released for theatrical distribution. The movie is also not available on Netflix there. Currently, only viewers from Europe can watch it.

“The Sanctuary” – trailer

This does not have to happen, because “Sanctuary” is not a Netflix original production, and the streaming giant acquired the rights to it under a licensing agreement. However, the production is now breaking popularity records in our country. In the Top 10 most watched films in our country, it came second, right after “Johnny”.

The film was terribly unlucky in terms of viewership in the cinema, because it was shown in Poland in July 2021, when cinemas had just reopened after the pandemic restrictions. This did not provide him with a record attendance, which could boast of a similarly themed film “The Exorcism of Sister Ann” during last year’s Cinema Festival, but in the era of streaming services, it has a chance to gain a second life.
