His work, as he describes it himself, is melancholic industrialism. He is inspired by what not everyone can see as beautiful – old factories and concrete blocks that are the permanent landscape of his immediate surroundings in Dąbrowa Górnicza. The young art teacher has been dealing with art for years, but he decides to remain faithful to his main passion, which is sport.

Although on a daily basis he is a physical education teacher at the Catholic Primary School and the Catholic Secondary School in Dąbrowa Górnicza, after hours he picks up the brush and is still looking for new opportunities offered by acrylic painting. However, he does not feel the need to promote his art abroad, although his works are compared to the achievements of one of the most recognizable Polish painters in the world.

Beksinski, Tarkowski and Lovecraft

37-year-old Sebastian Moń is self-taught. He started with drawing, but acrylic painting turned out to be his artistic path. The style he developed – melancholic industrialism – is associated by many people with the works of Zdzisław Beksiński, the world of Lovecraft’s books or the Strugatsky brothers, whose “Roadside Picnic” was brought to the big screen by master Andrei Tarkowski in Stalker. Associations with post-apocalyptic landscapes are justified by the inspirations of Monio himself. The painter admitted that in his free time he often reads the “STALKER” or “Metro 2033” series, but he does not have to look for similar views in literary fiction or his own dreams, which are also reflected in his works. This is the landscape of Dąbrowa Górnicza, where he lives, creates and works – industrial, slightly overwhelming, concrete. Even in the apparent ugliness, there is beauty, as evidenced by his eye-catching paintings.

The artist tries to create a coherent world with his work, where each painting tells a story taking place in one universe, while at the same time being a separate dimension, impossible to recognize at first glance.

– you can read on his website. Moń publishes his works not only on it, but also on Instagram, where he is followed by less than 1.5 thousand. people. So he’s still a niche artist – and that seems to suit him.

I don’t usually brag about my artistic achievements and I rather avoid talking about it if I’m not asked.

says the humble painter.

He would not like to teach painting

The painter’s talent was discovered by his wife, who is an art historian. It is she who tries to promote his work – quite effectively, because Monio’s works could be auctioned at the largest auction houses in Poland, including Sopot Auction House, Agra Art or DESA Unicum, where the paintings “In Śnialni” and “In Śnialni II” were valued at PLN 30,000. zlotys. The record was set at the One Bid online auction house – the valuation exceeded 36,000. zloty. Moń has also had several national exhibitions, e.g. in galleries in Wrocław, Kraków, Gdańsk, Toruń and Katowice. However, he is still not known in the world, although several foreign enthusiasts have his works in private collections. However, the artist himself prefers to devote himself to physical effort, not only to teaching – he runs marathons. I would not like to teach painting.

I have been an athlete from an early age and passing on knowledge in this field, I feel much more confident than if I were to teach painting.

– he said in an interview for Gazeta Wyborcza. However, Moń remains a prolific and active artist, and interest in his works is constantly growing. Perhaps it will reach the status of the greatest in the future.
