“Night Agent” is an action thriller with a complex plot and well-drawn characters based on the novel by Matthew Quirk. The main character is Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso) – a low-ranking FBI agent on duty in the basement of the White House on a phone that never rings… until one night it finally does. Picking up the phone sends Peter into a deadly plot leading to the Oval Office itself.
“Night Agent”. The series successfully transfers the action of the book to the screen
Quirk’s book received good reviews, and now the film adaptation is getting similar ones. “The best-selling creator was praised for its believable characters and complex, engaging plot. The creators of the Netflix series – led by Shawn Ryan – managed a rare art: they created an exemplary adaptation, deftly transferring to the screen everything that fans of the original valued most” – you can Spider’s Web. A reviewer for The Guardian gives the production four out of five stars that it has great acting, plenty of kills and a fast-paced plot, noting that it’s hard to ask for more from a spy series. The Hollywood Reporter, on the other hand, says that the series “goes well paced, is quite funny (especially in the second half)” and even if there are some shortcomings in the main mystery and depiction of the world of politics, the first 10 episodes encourage waiting for the sequel . On the website collecting the opinions of foreign film and series critics, Rotten Tomatoes, “Night Agent” has a decent, though not overwhelming, 67 percent. positive reviews (out of 15 counted), and additionally a very good average from viewers – 82 percent.
Behind the production is Shane Ryan, who created, among others, “The Shield” and “The SWAT”. We won’t find very familiar faces here, although fans of “Lucifer” (DB Woodside is in the cast) will surely notice the familiar ones, or Hong Chau, who can still be seen in some cinemas in “The Whale”, by the reviewer of “Variety”.
Night Agent – DB Woodside on the left Netflix promotional material
Netflix didn’t specifically promote it, but viewers found it
The 10-episode “Night Agent” is currently in first place among the most watched series in Poland, although it was not previously announced loudly. I admit that I heard about the production only after its premiere. Odys Korczyński from Film.org.pl also pointed this out:
From the outside, everything seems ordinary, standard, but the inside amazes with quality. The problem, however, is who will want to reach for such an uninterestingly packaged product. No promotional campaign, even a small banner in social media. No information that such a series will appear on social media and in the media space in general. Probably not enough money for advertising.
Let’s be glad that this time the viewers acted in the right direction – instead of being fooled by promotional materials for watching a poor title, they saw something that shouldn’t be a waste of time. The more so that you need to spend almost eight hours in front of the screen to watch all 10 episodes.
