After accusations of anti-Semitism made by the musician Gil Ofarim against employees of the Westin Hotel in Leipzig, the local public prosecutor and the management of the hotel are now trying to deal with what happened on the evening of October 4th. Ofarim had described in an emotional video that hotel employees had asked him to remove his chain with a Star of David if he wanted to check in. In response to the video, hundreds demonstrated in solidarity with Ofarim in front of the hotel, the management initially responded with an apology and put the employees in question on leave.
An employee now denies all allegations, reported Ofarim for defamation. The public prosecutor’s office is now trying to question witnesses of what happened in the hotel lobby. “So far we have no information from uninvolved third parties,” said spokesman Ricardo Schulz on Thursday. The investigation would certainly take a long time. The hotel management seems to be faster here, “in the meantime they have contacted all the guests who were standing in line behind Mr. Ofarim and who should have heard of the incident,” said a hotel manager Leipziger Volkszeitung. Ofarim, for his part, has not yet filed a complaint, but lawyers would advise the musician to do so, his management said.
