On Thursday, March 23, was held in the Regional Court in Łódź, a hearing was held in the trial of 49-year-old Marek N., who pretended to be a priest for 20 years without being ordained a priest. The false priest ran the Shelter House in Zgierz, where he kept his charges in deplorable conditions.

The man was a subdeacon of the Old Catholic Church of the Republic of Poland, i.e. an assistant to the priest.

Marek N. was charged with as many as 30 charges. The most serious concerns the exposure of the center’s charges to the loss of health and life or serious damage to health. The prosecutor’s office accuses N. of causing the death of 12 people over whom he was supposed to have custody. Marek N. regularly abused the older charges. In addition to expressions, he hit them on the head and pulled them by the ears. The investigation also found that he was robbing them of their pension benefits.

In Thursday’s hearing, a journalist who made a documentary for “Ekspres Reporterów” of Polish Television on the actions of a false priest testified as a witness. The collected material concerned the times before Marek N.’s stay in Zgierz – earlier, the man ran a similar center near Wołomin.

Leszek Ciechoński testified that in the presence of the cameras he talked to his older siblings, whom Marek N. allegedly placed in his center by force. He said that employees of the facility in Działy Czarnowskie (which N. ran illegally – ed.) took mobile phones from seniors to cut them off from the outside world. They were not allowed to leave the room more than once a day, a walk in the courtyard.

He added that when he and the TV crew first appeared at the center, the seniors detained there called out for help.

It was like a prison: they took away phones and did not allow contact with loved ones. Elderly, sick people in pajamas escaped at night through holes in the net, as if from a camp

Ciechonski said. The witness also testified that Marek N. used to take out bank loans for the personal data of his aged charges. These loans were often not repaid as the seniors died after a few months.

– It is simply unbelievable that a man with a special education education for over 20 years managed to deceive everyone. He was even sentenced to short suspended sentences. However, he was able to move his business to another place very quickly – he said in an interview with “Gazeta Wyborcza”.
