Since the beginning of the year, well-known streaming services have been deleting more productions, including those whose continuation fans have been waiting for. Among other things, he quit the series from “1899”, the animated “Conspiracy Corporation”, “Single in New York” with Neil Patrick Harris or “Bastard from Hell” and “Road to Promotion”.
Similar changes can also be seen in the offer. As a result of reshuffling HBO and Warner Bros. “Westworld” and the series “Unreal” and “The Gordity Chronicles” disappeared from the platform. As it turns out, the decisions made by the streaming giants strongly influence the choices of viewers.
Streaming platforms are removing shows. This affects the choices of viewers
Users of streaming platforms are increasingly cautious about choosing new titles to watch. They don’t want to get involved in the plot and the lives of the characters, knowing that they may not get a continuation of the story. According to Variety, YouGov conducted a survey among American viewers. The results are surprising.
As many as 48 percent of the respondents admitted that they prefer the so-called binge-watching, i.e. watching many episodes of a series in a row. However, the statistics do not apply to productions that are just getting started and have one season on their account. 46 percent of those surveyed said they usually or always waited until the series finale to watch. This model is always chosen by 25 percent of the 18-34 age group, and sometimes as much as 34 percent.
This means that streaming services and their users are making vicious circles. Netflix evaluates the potential of the series a month after the premiere, if the viewership is not enough – it does not invest in the continuation. In turn, viewers largely do not reach for the first seasons of series, because they do not want to get involved in a story whose ending they will never know.
Streaming services and their users have come full circle
31 percent of people who took part in the survey declare that in 2022 alone, one in three productions they watched was deleted. Hence, as many as 27 percent of those surveyed say they are concerned about another waste of time. On the other hand, 24 percent of respondents want to avoid the tension of waiting for the next season of the series and watch it only after the finale airs.
The conclusions suggest themselves. Until streaming services change their tactics of assessing the potential of published productions, viewers should rethink their habits in watching series. Perhaps it’s better to treat yourself to a small dose of tension related to waiting for the next season of your favorite series than not having the opportunity to watch it at all.
