Chylińska dropped out of secondary school. She wrote in her diary: God, I want to be a singer because I don’t want to pass my final exams

Agnieszka Chylińska’s talent was revealed quite early. So the young vocalist decided to put everything on one card and resign from continuing her education in favor of a career in the artistic industry. In the same year, she was discovered by some of the most respected instrumentalists in the industry. Since then, the 90s belonged to her.

ONA and Skawalker are two bands that define the sound of alternative music in Poland from the 90s, and they are connected by one charismatic vocalist – Agnieszka Chylińska. The daughter of a sports journalist and teacher, she knew from the beginning that she wanted to connect her life with art. However, this decision was bought with educational problems.

Chylińska began to create at the age of six, when she wrote her first poems. However, the first serious musical successes came in high school. The young singer took third place during the French Song Festival in Starogard Gdański, but she could feel a winner – it was then that she was noticed by the members of her first future band – Second Face, with whom she received the opportunity to support Grzegorz Skawiński’s band – Skawalker. Although she previously rejected the offer of lending vocals to m.in. TSA Evolution, agreed to the guitarist’s proposal and soon became part of Skawalker, who evolved into ONA while working on the first album with the new line-up. Chylińska was a teenager at the time, and although she dreamed of giving concerts or releasing significant albums, she could not feel prepared for what the choices made involved.

Too fast

The singer admitted that she “missed the dream” of a great career and felt lost getting into the industry too young. When she joined Skawiński in 1994, she was studying in the second year of high school, and working on the material, the pressure associated with it and the lifestyle popular among alternative musicians made it difficult for her to continue her education.

The first depressions, breakdowns, suicide attempts, these were the first years SHE. 18 years old was too soon, I was destroyed, broken, fucked up, this alcohol, drugs, guys, it was too fast.

– Chylińska quotes the Pikio.pl portal. She admitted she had a problem with cocaine. – I was drawn to: I must be cult, I must take, show that I do not break. And at the same time, the thought in the back of your head: you are doing something incredibly dangerous – she said in an interview for “Twój Styl”. The artist, who in one of the greatest solo hits sang that “she will always be guilty”, for years actually struggled with guilt related to the lack of support from loved ones in the earliest stages of her career.

I got a wolf ticket from my parents – according to my mother, I was an artist from a burned-out theater, and I disappointed my father very much. I couldn’t understand why they didn’t support me. I was full of complexes, I needed a call from my mother who would say: “Daughter, you can do it”. I’ve been running on this fuel all my life. I constantly have to prove something to someone and tell someone that it’s worth loving me, it’s worth trusting me.

– Chylińska told fans on her YouTube channel.

A request to God

Mental problems and a progressive career contributed to the accumulation of backlogs in school. The singer found out that she might have problems with getting a promotion to the next class and, as a result, with taking her final exams.

In the third year of high school, two months before the end of the year, I was severely compromised in several subjects. The teaching council decided to give me one more chance, provided that I would apply myself to my work and catch up. I’ve been cramming for weeks, improving my grades. Then it turned out that the decision not to go to the next class was made much earlier.

she told Elle magazine. Although she tried to improve her situation, she wrote in her diary: “Lord God, I am asking you to become a famous singer before my final exams, because I do not want to pass my final exams.” Her pleas were somewhat answered. In 1997, they received the prestigious Fryderyk statuette in the category of the best ensemble. Then she addressed eloquent words to teachers – “Fuck off, I hate you.” She never went to high school.

25 years old and I’m still in high school.

– she joked at the next Fryderyk gala, this time in 2006. Today, she continues her career as a judge of talent shows, a solo artist and an author of children’s books.
