“Emigracja XD” is a film adaptation of the book of the same title. plays a boy from the self-proclaimed “European capital of gooseberries”, who has to leave for Great Britain with his friend Stomil (a sensational Michał Balicki in this role). Their journey is full of extremely absurd adventures. According to the assurances of the author, i.e. the invariably anonymous Malcolm XD, half of the events he describes really happened to him when he went to work in Great Britain with a friend from high school after graduation. So Włosok had to play a real character – he had the luxury that Malcolm XD worked with them on the set almost throughout the shooting period. As the actor admitted in an interview with Gazeta.pl, when he accepted the role, he did not know the literary prototype:
Włosok played the most “unknown” known man of the Polish Internet. Who is Malcom XD?
It all started in 2012, when a short story started circulating on the web beginning with the words “My old man is a fishing fanatic”. After more than a decade, it is one of the most popular (and even cult) “pastes” in Poland. The name comes from the English words “copy and paste” and means that a given story can be pasted in the comments under posts on various internet forums, etc. Usually it is impossible to determine the authorship of such texts, but in this case it was different. Almost from the beginning it was known that the story was created by a certain Malcolm XD, who nevertheless consistently refuses to show his face in the media and reveal his true identity.
Since 2012, Malcolm XD has had, among others, the short film adaptation of “Fanatyk” starring, he wrote several dozen other, no less funny pastes that “attracted millions of readers in front of the screens”, and he also published three books. “Emigration” is the first of them.
The novel, published in 2019, was so liked by director Łukasz Kośmicki that he managed to convince the right people at , to make a comedy series out of this material. Malcolm XD wrote the script for the production together with him, and then worked with the crew on the set – as he laughed in an interview with Gazeta.pl (the premiere is coming soon), mainly so that no one would spoil any of his dialogue. During the press conference, he also said that the fact that Tomasz Włosok plays him is a great ennoblement for him.
– The funny thing is that I read this book when we were already in the middle of filming, so I didn’t have this superknowledge. I based it on the script I originally got and it made me laugh a lot. From the reader’s perspective, this story was unusual. (…) Then, when we entered the set, I acquired this knowledge, learned more about the character and went deeper, while performing specific tasks, I focused less on the funny layer of the story. I think the funniest and most important thing is to convey this drama. It is obvious that this is a classic comedy structure – said Tomasz Włosok during an interview with Gazeta.pl.
– During the shooting, I reached out for Malcolm’s advice and help many times, because I wanted to somehow place my and our joint image of this character. And also for our duet with Stomil. (…) It was very helpful what I learned from Malcolm. I guess I’m proud of what we’ve been able to create. This path of balance, balance, the fact that they create such yin and yang with Stomil. It’s cool, I like it,” he said with a smile.
– I personally loved Michał Balicki and would be happy to adopt him. Or he me. We would manage it somehow – I already have a daughter, so it would be easier if I adopted him. I’m already a father. I had a great time with him. (…) We could afford to improvise, we could afford it to live all the time, we could pledge ourselves without being terrified at the same time – praised his colleague from the set and the director
– In the case of our “Emigration” I absolutely believe in this project and I’m looking forward to it. We had a great time and we fucking love it. I hope you feel the same as we do. When asked what he thought about the saying that having fun on the set means a bad movie, he replied:
This is some bullshit, because if you feel great with someone and have a great time, you have much more readiness and space in your head, and you want more and you can do more, because you feel more confident because you feel good. So what is going to happen that something is going to go wrong with this feeling and having fun together? Unless it’s mediocre and pointless. However, materials come out as we have energy. I believe that if there is laughter on set, there is laughter on screen.
