Just before the holidays, my husband’s parents called me with a proposal to take their grandson to the seaside for a few days. I was surprised because they usually take him to stay longer during the holidays. Although we don’t have the best relationship with my mother-in-law, I accepted the offer with gratitude, because it’s been a long time since my husband and I had the opportunity to spend some time alone together.
Over the past few days, I’ve been getting lots of photos of him having a great time with his grandparents. Mother-in-law took her son on vacation. Cool? Well, not really, because after everything I got “bills to be settled”. When the trip was proposed, the subject of finances was not mentioned, so I decided that since they were inviting their only grandchild to the trip, they would cover most of the costs. Especially since they can really afford it. When packing my son, I gave him more than usual pocket money anyway, so that he would have some of his whims and not pull his grandparents on everything.
Maybe there are mother-in-laws in the world like from a fairy tale, but there are also those we hear about in popular jokes. Unfortunately, my husband’s mother is the latter type… And with this action she once again proved it. It’s interesting that when we invite them, for example, to dinner, we don’t make her pay for herself. As she handed me the receipts, I could see that even my father-in-law was stupid, and my husband thought his mother was just joking. It got very awkward, but my husband finally spoke up saying that we would not give them a single zloty for the trip they proposed.
Mother-in-law didn’t speak to us for a month, but I think she finally realized how stupid and tactless she was… I’m curious if anyone had similar hits with their mother-in-law or father-in-law. I have learned a lesson and I will not forget it. From now on, I will make sure of the possible “costs” every time they want to see their grandson.
