Juliette’s great-grandfather was a Belgian who fell in love with a Polish woman. Henri Stalens quickly married Maria, and the fruit of their love was their son Andrzej. He, in turn, married Julia Helena Młynarczyk. They had two children, Henryk and Monika. The latter is Juliette’s beloved grandmother. They lived in Poland until the army of the Third Reich came here. Then they decided to leave the country as soon as possible, but unfortunately they were arrested in Lviv. They spent 6 months in prison. They saved their money, managed to bribe the guards and escaped to France. In the film “Breaking and Returning” Juliette played a Bosnian immigrant in London. At meetings promoting the work, she mentioned that she drew on the difficult experiences of her grandparents, especially her grandmother.

My beloved grandmother Julia was an emigrant, she came from Poland. She did not get rid of the Polish accent until the end. Remembering her was one of the reasons I took on the role. I thought a lot about my grandmother while filming this movie. I felt a bit like I was honoring her through this character.

Julliete’s mother still feels particularly attached to Poland, even though she did not know it well. In an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza, she said:

As a child, I noticed that my mother had a strange accent. And that the parents speak a foreign-sounding language among themselves. On Christmas night my mother would take me in her arms and sing in that language; I felt like in paradise then. That’s why I missed Polish on a daily basis, normally only French was spoken at home, Grandpa Stalens was very careful about it. I like Poland very much, although I don’t know why. I breathe better here, even in Nowa Huta.
