Although in recent years, Polish productions have been regularly mentioned among the Oscar nominees, Polish actors and actresses can rarely count on individual awards. There is one woman in history who had a chance to become the best leading actress – Ida Kamiñska.

In 1967, Ida Kamińska was on the lips of the entire film world. Her role in The Shop on Main Street was honored with an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Since then, the artist is the only Pole who has been nominated for this award.

Ida Kamińska has been connected with art since she was a child. She made her stage debut when she was 5 years old

Ida Kamińska’s family was strongly associated with acting and art. The artist’s parents performed on the stage of theaters. Her father Abraham Izaak Kamiński was also a well-known director. Ida was born in the Teatralnaya Gostinica hotel in Odessa in 1899. Five years later, she appeared on the stage of Jardin d’Hiver in Warsaw for the first time. Kamińska’s parents were the founders of the Jewish Theater. From 1916 to 1918, viewers could admire young Ida on his stage.

In later years, Ida Kamińska and her husband ran several Polish theaters. Everything changed with the advent of World War II. Her apartment and almost all of her belongings were destroyed in a bombing raid. Growing repression forced the actress and her family to emigrate. She returned to Poland only in 1947. The communist authorities proposed to her to organize the Jewish Theater in Łódź, which then turned into the State Jewish Theater and was moved to Warsaw.

In 1965, she appeared in the film “Shop on Main Street”. The work turned out to be a worldwide hit and was nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Ida was also nominated for the award in the category of Best Actress in a Leading Role. To this day, she is the only Pole who has been awarded in this way.

Ultimately, the statuette went to Elizabeth Taylor. However, many people believed that the Polish artist deserved this distinction. The success of “Shop on the Main Street” opened the door to a great career for Ida. The best producers of the 1960s competed for her employment. The woman, instead of publicity, preferred to return to the country. Unfortunately, the growing anti-Semitism in Poland, fueled by the communist authorities, meant that she was given an ultimatum. Kamińska was to return to the US, renouncing her citizenship.

Repression meant that Ida had no choice. She had to hand over documents and an apartment in Warsaw. After leaving for America, the actress starred in only one – “The Angel Levine”. In the US, she had the status of a real star. She appeared, among others on “The Tonight Show” by Johnny Carlson and slowly put her life back together. She returned to Poland for a short time in 1975. Her arrival was associated with considerable controversy. The authorities were afraid of the actress’s speech. Refusal, however, would have caused an international scandal, so she was finally allowed to come.

– Jews of Warsaw! I don’t know who did better: me who left or you who stayed. You have your home and I don’t have this home – confessed Ida Kamińska during a gala organized in honor of her mother. Despite the successes she had overseas, the actress was never entirely happy. She felt Polish, but the repressive authorities forced her to leave her homeland.
