Gary Glitter was sentenced to 16 years for sexual offenses committed against minors. Halfway through his sentence, the artist left prison on bail. He did not enjoy his freedom for long.

Gary Glitter, actually Paul Francis Gadd, is a 61-year-old glam rock singer. The musician gained the greatest popularity in the 70s, when he conquered the British scene with his hits. Later, the name of the artist began to appear in the media due to his reprehensible crimes.

In 2015, Glitter was sentenced to 16 years in prison for sexually abusing three young girls between 1975 and 1980. He was also charged with attempted rape and four counts of assault. The musician also had to answer for having sex with a girl under the age of 13.

Last month, Glitter passed half of his scheduled sentence and the artist was released on bail. A Ministry of Justice spokesman told the BBC that sex offenders such as Paul Gadd are closely monitored by police and probation officers. As such, they must abide by “the strictest conditions of release”.

A few days after being released from prison, Gary Glitter had to go back into custody. Riots and protests broke out outside the hotel where he was staying. The official reason for the musician’s breach of parole is not known, but the BBC suggests that the artist has breached an agreement to carry a GPS tag with him, which allows the authorities to determine his location.

A spokesman for the Probation Service stated:

Protecting the public is our priority. That’s why we set strict conditions for release, and when offenders break them, we don’t hesitate to send them back to detention.

Filmmakers became interested in Glitter’s story. Netflix has announced that it is working on a documentary series dedicated to the history of the musician. The picture is to tell the story of the singer’s life, and the creators announce that they have managed to reach previously unpublished materials and talk to some of the victims of the criminal.
