Oscars 2023. Why wasn’t the red carpet red? Viewers outraged by the first change in 62 years

Oscars 2023 handed out. As every year, the red carpet was very popular, where we could admire the sophisticated creations of the stars. This year, however, for the first time in 62 years, the stars did not walk purple.

Since 1961, the Oscars have been associated, among other things, with the red carpet. It is here that the legends of cinema have been posing with their statuettes and drowning in flashes for years. The creative team responsible for this year’s gala broke a long-standing tradition. This year, for the first time during the award ceremony, the carpet was colored champagne.

Oscars 2023. Why wasn’t the red carpet this year red?

The 95th Academy Awards was held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Presenters, journalists, stars and reporters were greeted by a carpet in a powdery, slightly peach shade. Event host Jimmy Kimmel joked that the decision meant everyone was confident there would be “no bloodshed” after the results were announced.

The new creative team of the gala, headed by Lisa Love, former editor-in-chief of “Vogue” and creative director Raúl Àvila, is responsible for breaking with the long-standing tradition.

In an interview with the Associated Press Love, the creator explained why such a radical change. It was about adjusting the colors to the time of day and the costumes of the guests of the gala. The ceremony takes place in the afternoon, but the elegant dress code of the stars suggests an evening event.

We changed the daytime event to a night event. It’s evening here, even if we’re celebrating at three in the afternoon, Love explains.

The former editor-in-chief of “Vogue” admits that before the decision was made, they experimented with darker colors, but in the end the elegant, champagne fabric won out.

The red carpet has changed color after 62 years

“The color evokes a sunset. It is the color of the sky just before the golden hour” – adds Love and emphasizes that this year’s choice does not mean that the champagne color of the carpet will also appear at subsequent galas.

Those commenting on the change are divided. Entries appeared on the web that the champagne color was too bright and got dirty very quickly.

Angela Bassett was happy with the change. The actress said that the new color of the carpet does not bother her at all. On the contrary. In an interview with “Variety” she pointed out that the bright color goes well with her creation.
