Google data will help prosecute for abortion? The company has spoken

Wyborcza.biz writes that in the United States, online pharmacies were supposed to provide data on the purchase of early-morning pills, among others. to the Google concern. Can this information be obtained later by law enforcement? The concern has already referred to the latest reports.

Wyborcza.biz refers to the disturbing findings of the independent website ProPublica. The portal’s journalists took a look at eleven pharmacies offering online services that sell morning-after pills. The investigation shows that nine of these entities provide information about clients to external companies, among which, among others, is Google. The data shared by pharmacies mainly concerns Internet search preferences in order to provide a given user with profiled advertisements.

Usually, this information is anonymous, but according to ProPublica, Google could track the indicated users by the unique IP number assigned to their web browser. So if the order were made in a state where abortion is not legal, then law enforcement could demand that the company provide it with such data.

Ever since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the famous Roe vs. Wade (who guaranteed all American women the right to abortion, now an autonomous decision in this regard left to individual states – ed.) revealed that this type of data is provided to Google by the following online pharmacies selling abortion pills: Abortion Ease, BestAbortionPill.com, PrivacyPillRX, PillsOnlineRX, Secure Abortion Pills AbortionRx, Generic Abortion Pills, Abortion Privacy and Online Abortion Pill Rx.

“From the report Business Insider’it appears that the police received data collected by online pharmacies, from social media posts (…) in order to file cases against women seeking access to abortion.

An example of this type of data sharing in an abortion case was the case in the US in 2022, when law enforcement authorities called on Facebook to provide information from conversations on Messenger. It was a conversation between a mother, Jessica Burgess, and her 17-year-old pregnant daughter.

Searching for information on abortion in our country is not punishable, notes Wyborcza.biz. What actions are penalized under the current law? These are, for example, encouragement and assistance in obtaining access to termination of pregnancy, i.e. the transfer of abortion pills and the abortion itself.

Justyna WydrzyƄska, during the lockdown in force during the pandemic, helped one of the women in need (who was a victim of violence by her partner – ed.) to gain access to abortion by giving her morning-after pills.

There is a Google statement. “Purely hypothetical and impossible”

Google itself spoke about the reports of the ProPublica portal.

The allegations outlined in a recent ProPublica article about Google Analytics are purely hypothetical and technically impossible. Google Analytics is specifically designed to prevent users from being identified by Google itself or by anyone else, including law enforcement. In addition, Google has a strict policy against advertising people based on sensitive information

the company announced.
