Brendan Fraser, an actor whose acting career seemed to become irrelevant in the 2010s, dedicated his Best Leading Actor Oscar win to the team of The whalewhom he thanked for saving his career.

His near-disappearance from the world of cinema from 2010 to 2018 was explained by Fraser himself in an interview with GQ magazine. Despite the fact that The Mummy trilogy brought him big returns, it also caused him problems with his body due to the physical demands of the stunts he had to perform.

Perhaps the most determining factor in the decline of Fraser’s acting career was the alleged sexual abuse he allegedly suffered at the hands of Phillip Berk, then president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization responsible for the Golden Globe Awards.

Seconds before the awards ceremony, the camera panned to a tearful Fraser. After announcing Austin Butler, Paul Mescal, Colin Farrell and Bill Nighy, the former star of the trilogy of The mummy he gave his speech while hyperventilating.

“I thank the Academy … I thank Darren Aronofsky for throwing a lifeline into my career,” Fraser said. He also complimented his co-star Hong Chau, who was also nominated for the Best Supporting Actress category: “Only whales can swim the depths of Hong Chau’s talent.”

“I started in this industry 30 years ago and it wasn’t easy for me, but I had a certain ease that I didn’t appreciate until it was gone,” the actor reflected on his career.
