Theoretically, it could be considered that the biggest loser of 2023 is the film “Ghosts of Inisherin”, which despite nine nominations did not win a single award. What’s more, Steven Spielberg with his “Fabelmen” lost in the clash with “Everywhere at once”. The duo Daniels (i.e. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) deprived him of the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Picture. But it still doesn’t seem as severe as juxtaposed with praise from the stage for the Oscar-winning “Top Gun: Maverick”.
Oscars 2023. The biggest loser of the gala
“We saved the cinema and all we have from it is an Oscar for sound” – comments the statuette for the best sound for the film “: Maverick”, known as Zwierz popcultural blogger Katarzyna Czajka-Kominiarczuk. In fact, considering that during the 95th Oscars gala it was said from the stage that this film has invaluable merits for the entire film industry, because it once again attracted viewers to cinemas that were declining due to the pandemic, one Oscar – and in addition for the sound – falls out quite pale.
Jimmy Kimmel actually paraphrased the words of Steven Spielberg, who thus praised Tom Cruise during the Oscar breakfast. The famous director told the actor, who was also one of the producers of the new “Top Gun”, he said to his face:
You saved Hollywood’s ass. You probably saved theatrical distribution. Seriously – <> could have saved the entire cinema industry.
The production was also nominated in the categories of “Best Picture”, “Adapted Screenplay”, “Song”, “Editing” and “Special Effects”.
“
It is worth recalling that “Top Gun: Maverick” was supposed to premiere in 2020, but it had to be postponed due to the pandemic. Tom Cruise strongly emphasized that it would be unthinkable for the film to go straight to streaming services. The more so that with other producers he spent millions on special effects – just to refine them, they moved the premiere from 2019 to 2020 for the first time.
Let’s add that effective and intricate sequences of air fights were developed for the production. Cruise wanted to show viewers what the experience of military fighter pilots was really like. That’s why he insisted that not only his scenes in the fighter plane be shot in real flight. Also other actors playing military men had to shoot in flying planes.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer emphasized in one of the interviews: “The actors also had to learn how to operate the cameras, because when they were in the air, they were basically directing themselves.” That is why they took part in editing, cinematography and film lighting classes.
When the production was screened at the Cannes Film Festival, the audience gave it a five-minute standing ovation.
