Confession raises a lot of emotions. Recently, an article was published on our website in which several women told about their experiences and reflections on this subject. The incidents that took place in the confessional were permanently etched in their memory. You can read the material here:
It’s no secret that conservative Catholic circles are reluctant to see any changes in confession. A perfect example of this is the criticism of the option that has recently appeared in one of the German parishes.
Portal outraged by how Germans confess
The case concerns the parish of St. Peter and Paul in Bochum in the Diocese of Essen. The Polonia Christiana portal (pch24.pl) recently became outraged about how the faithful can confess there. – Its Ordinary is Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck, one of Germany’s most ardent progressives –
It’s a “silent confession”. It is worth mentioning that this option has been provided by many parishes in Germany for years. In this case, the faithful should make the sign of the cross after the mass, and then mentally confess their sins and ask for their forgiveness.
Importantly, however, if any of the faithful from Bochum prefer personal confession in the confessional, they can also use this option. Despite this, the author of the article, which was published on the Polania Christiana portal, is outraged by the “quiet confession” option. As he emphasizes, it is contrary to canon law.
What does a Catholic not have to confess?
Confession of a Catholic in the confessional, even in Poland, does not have to include all sins. so-called venial (light) sins are forgiven to the faithful in a collective act of penance. It takes place at the beginning of every holy mass. Venial sins include, for example, forgetting to pray, gossip or laziness.
Serious sins include: theft, adultery, divination, murder. Their list is updated from time to time. A few years ago, the media became famous about a new list of such offenses. It included, among others:
- watching pornography;
- pedophilia;
- bestiality;
- drug trafficking and taking;
- online hate;
- environment pollution;
- genetic experiments;
- bullying.
