There are still a few months until we can once again enjoy the Oscars 2022, the most prestigious Awards in the history of cinema. Nevertheless, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Spain, has already selected the three national stories that will compete to gain a place in the only place that is possible to submit to the contest. The institution itself will announce the chosen one next October 5th, after struggling through a list of a total of 48 feature films.
The Oscars 2022 will correspond to, neither more nor less than the 94th edition to be held on March 27, a date much closer to the usual before the pandemic. The three chosen; Parallel mothers, Mediterranean and The Good Patron have been made known in an act chaired by the director of the Academy, Mariano Barroso. The name of the productions has been read by the actress Veronica Echegui, in a first step in the Spanish career towards the prestigious statuette that until today only José Luis Garci has achieved (Start over, 1982), Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque, 1993), Almodóvar (Everything about my mother, 1999) and Alejandro Amenábar (Out to sea, 2004).
“Parallel mothers”
Surely be the big favorite, even more so after Penelope Cruz won the Volpi a Cup Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival. It will be difficult for Almodóvar’s new film not to be the one chosen, taking into account the international repercussion that the La Mancha filmmaker has abroad. It opens in our country next October 8.
“Mediterranean”
A Spanish-Greek co-production that tells the story of two lifeguards marching to the Mediterranean areas where thousands of people risk their lives to get a better future. A totally topical option that could have a chance, due to its theme since Almodóvar was already given a place last year to compete with Pain and glory.
“The good boss”
The new partnership between Javier Bardem and Fernando León de Aranoa tells the story of an entrepreneur who is preparing the arrival of a commission that will reward business excellence. However, everything will flip when things start to go wrong, happening a series of unexpected consequences.
