She was harassed at work. People on the Net: “Let him get a job at a funeral home”

At the end of February we published a text on harassment in the workplace. One of its heroines was Anita (name changed), a physiotherapist. The article coincided with the campaign of the Polish Society of Anti-Discrimination Law and aroused a lot of reactions. “That’s why I had an office only for women,” she wrote, among others. one of the commenters.

Anita, after many humiliating moments with patients, decided to open the practice to women only. As she said, many of her friends share this kind of experience.

The fact that these are not exceptions is confirmed by its authors, who looked at e.g. experience of people from the time of their vocational education, even before starting work in the profession. The results showed that although the majority of respondents feel safe in these places, some numbers should still raise concern.

The collected data show that the vast majority of people feel safe in their place of vocational education (“yes” and “rather yes” collected over 90 percent of answers). People who took part in the survey also feel that they can talk about sexual harassment in this place relatively safely (over 50 percent). It should be noted, however, that almost half of the respondents do not feel safe in this regard, which is particularly worrying when compared to the information that more than a third of the people who took part in the study experienced sexual harassment in the place of vocational training (36.2 percent)

– we can read in the report.

“That’s why I had an office for women only”

evoked many reactions and comments. Some advised that in such situations, when the specialist is alone with the patient in the office, a third member of staff should also be present.

That’s why I had an office only for women after a few such numbers and there was peace

– one of the Internet users shared her experience.

“Poles allow themselves too much, I write about men. The worst thing is that they don’t see anything wrong with it and it’s funny for them,” commented one of the women, referring to some reactions.

“Let him get a job at a funeral home”

Unfortunately, a large part of the comments are simply not suitable for quoting. The problem we are describing continues to show that reactions to the confession of a person who has experienced sexual harassment in the workplace can be outrageous.

“You should listen to this lady and appreciate the return,” said one of the commentators, probably referring to the fragment in which our interlocutor talked about a humiliating experience with one of the patients who molested her.

Of course, there were also all kinds of “advice” and amused reactions. “Get him a job at a funeral home,” someone wrote below the text. There were some expected questions, too. almost sacramental “why didn’t she react right away?”.

It was succinctly stated by one of the Internet users: “It is impossible to ‘react in the moment’ because the normal emotional reaction in such a situation is, among others, freezing”.

Over 90 percent of people have experienced harassment in the workplace

The study, which was conducted by PTPA in the period from April to June 2022, showed very worrying trends. The most important conclusions from the survey include: that sexual harassment in the workplace is still a widespread problem. In most cases, women experience it, although there are also men with such experiences.

The majority of people who took part in the survey declared that they had experienced harassment in vocational training, the workplace and services – more than 80 percent of respondents. More than 90 percent of survey participants have experienced workplace harassment at least once. One fifth of those surveyed, or around 19.9 percent, have experienced harassment in the workplace more than ten times. According to the authors of the report, harassment is an integral part of the professional experience for many women. As much as 85.6 percent. of respondents experienced crossing their borders at the place of service provision at least once.

The most common form of harassment, in all areas, is contemptuous reference to representatives of one of the sexes, which indicates the ‘gendered’ nature of this form of discrimination

– we read in the most important conclusions contained in the document.
