The life of Izabella Czajce-Stachowicz could become a great idea for a film script. She stood out from other women with her beauty, which also went hand in hand with intelligence. She was married three times, bore as many as five surnames and gave three different dates of birth.

Izabella Czajka-Stachowicz, née Szwarc, was born on November 5, 1898 in Sosnowiec. It is true that later she gave different dates and places of birth, such as Warsaw and 1906. Her French mother, Felicja, left Poland before the outbreak of World War I. Young Bella was brought up by her father Wilhelm Szwarc, who was a wealthy entrepreneur. He often talked about his daughter’s ideas meshmeaning “crazy”. Isabella combined these crazy ideas with her innate intelligence. Thus, when she was a teenager, she planned to murder her neighbor after reading Crime and Punishment.

Izabella was admitted to philosophy and history of art at the University of Warsaw. Then she continued her studies in Berlin. It was there that she met her first husband Aleksander Herz. Unfortunately, the marriage ended right after the wedding night. Bella wrote about her in one of her books.

There have been many men in Bella’s life. She was associated with with the painter Robert Beremy, and her second husband was the outstanding architect Jerzy Gelbard. Unfortunately, this marriage was also far from perfect. Jerzyk, because that’s what Izabella called her partner, cheated on her with Stefania Morgenstern. To make matters worse, Bella and Jerzy’s common child died shortly after birth. The couple pretended that they were still together for a long time.

Izabella wrote many books, usually . In them, she described her adventures with lovers, life with artists, occupation and war. It was during this period that she took the name Czajka. After driving the German troops out of the country, Bella found herself in Katowice, where she joined the Citizens’ Militia. She was quickly promoted to the rank of captain, and then returned to Warsaw to devote herself to art again. She married for the third time, this time to an old friend, Władysław Stachowicz, with whom she lived a quarter of a century. Over the years, she has bitten other artists, including Witold Gombrowicz.

Her, although she could not find a publisher for a long time, became a real hit in the People’s Republic of Poland. People had to sign up for waiting lists and stand in lines to rent at least one of them. Bella died in December 1969. Today, few people remember what an extraordinary woman she was.
