The kings of Spain use public transport to go to work

The kings of Spain starred in an unusual image this Monday when they got on a city bus in Madrid and traveled part of the journey together with other travelers, with whom they chatted and took pictures.

To the surprise of the citizens, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia rode at a stop in the center of the capital of Spain, to attend an official ceremony accompanied by other authorities.

“Good morning”, the king greeted the driver after entering the vehicle, one hundred percent electric, so they did not have to pay a ticket as it was free.

In the case of the head of state, who usually travels by car or official plane, he confessed that it was the first time he got on a city bus, while Doña Letizia recalled that he used it a lot when he was studying in Madrid, first to go to high school. and later to the university.

At the end of the journey the passengers got off but the kings continued their journey, already seated, to a headquarters of the municipal bus company EMT where they inaugurated the acts of the 75th anniversary of the public company.

They were accompanied on the trip on the electric bus by the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and the Spanish Minister of Transport, Raquel Sánchez.

“When people entered, they were very surprised by the presence of the kings, but immediately they began to talk with them and take photos,” Martínez-Almeida, who also worked as a photographer, told reporters.

During the journey, the mayor informed them that the municipal bus fleet is made up of more than 2,000 vehicles, although the king pointed out: “There are 2,096, exactly.”

“When they go to a place, they know where they are going,” said Martínez-Almeida, who added that Felipe VI was “pleasantly surprised” by the service in his first experience aboard a municipal bus.

Upon reaching the garages, the kings said goodbye to the driver, Borja Chantres, whom they thanked for the service.

Chantres, who was aware that he was going to have some special passengers, corroborated the “total surprise” of the people who got on the bus.

“It has been a lot of fun. People were first silent, they did not believe it, and then they already reacted ”, described the driver.

In the garages they came to see historical buses of the company in its museum exhibited for the occasion, among them a two-story model from 1957, of the Leyland brand, which the kings went up to.

In the case of Felipe VI, who is almost two meters tall, with some difficulty due to the low ceiling, which led the queen to sit on his leg to be able to occupy the same seat, as revealed by the mayor.

The family photo with the workers of the company, who cheered and cheered them, put the finishing touch on the visit.

The visit follows the one that Felipe VI made to Metro de Madrid in 2018 for the centenary of the underground, when he traveled a wide section of one of its lines. (I)
